Elizabeth Beattie is an experienced journalist and writer based in Tokyo. Currently on staff at The Japan Times, she covers economic and societal developments across the country.

She has reported from prisons, G7 summits, luxury fashion shows, protests, and factory floors.

She previously lived in Hong Kong, where she covered the business of law for Thomson Reuters, and reported on political changes in the city for The Sunday Telegraph and Al Jazeera. She also mapped China’s diplomatic strategy in the Pacific amid rising regional tensions for Nikkei Asia, covering how domestic political unrest and historical context was strategically exploited.

From time to time she acts as a broadcast correspondent or commentator for the BBC, Radio New Zealand, RTE, Monocle and CBC.

Outside of reporting she has written editorial for luxury design and fashion brands, and provided analysis for professional services firms.
